UPDATE - MEDIA ADVISORY
PRESS CONFERENCE on JULY 19TH D.C
US-NIGERIA POLICY MUST ADDRESS THE SILENT SLAUGHTER
WASHINGTON, D.C.— The U.S. government has declined to criticize the government of Nigeria’s appalling religious freedom violations and broader disregard for human rights – and particularly the slaughter of Christians. Nigeria has been ranked one of the world's worst-governed nations, and nearly every region faces a security crisis - from kidnapping to extremist insurgencies. According to ICON, Nigeria has deep roots in faith and religion but is at extreme risk for increased violence and implications on vast religious communities. In the South-South, there remains distrust of the Nigerian government due to the Nigerian Civil War (1967-70), where millions of citizens were killed. It remains a volatile area where Christian Igbos remain disregarded and discriminated In the North and North-Central regions, non-Fulani Muslims are targeted, but not on the scale of Christians who face continued attacks and killings from Boko Haram/ISWAP, bandits, and Fulani militants.
