International Youth School Prijedor

This May, we organized the first edition of International School Prijedor with 20 young people from BiH and the world in cooperation with the Sarajevo Memorial Center. After a pre-program in Sarajevo, the young people traveled to Prijedor to visit the location of Tomašica mass grave, as well as the Trnopolje concentration camp, after which they joined the International Conference on Concentration Camps, talks with survivors, and the annual White Armband walk in Prijedor.

Visiting the Srebrenica Memorial Center

We joined the first official visit of Damon M. Wilson, President & CEO of National Endowment for Democracy, to Srebrenica Memorial Center and Eastern Bosnia. The trip was especially meaningful as it was organized on USA's Memorial Day honoring and mourning the U.S. military personnel who died while serving in the United States Armed Forces. We were humbled to join our partners from NED in this trip and are thankful for their support to our mission of fostering a culture of peace and preventing violent conflict in the Western Balkans.

International Conference in Prijedor

Last month, we joined a two-day international conference in Prijedor on concentration camps in Bosnia and Herzegovina, organized by the Sarajevo Memorial Center in cooperation with the Association of Former Detention Camps in Kozarac. Our Erna Mačkić also spoke during the conference at the panel dedicated to the work of journalists during and after periods of war.

New Research Publication Alert

On the occasion of the International Day Against Sexual Violence in Conflict, our latest research publication looks at cases of sexual violence under the jurisdiction of the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia and discusses the legacy of the Tribunal in domestic and international law in Bosnia and Herzegovina and around the world. The judicial precedents set by the Tribunal are still deeply relevant today, because this type of crime is still present. The author of the research is our former intern Miriam Specka, and more is available at balkandiskurs.com.

Photography of Remembrance

In Prijedor we joined the opening of the Zidovi (Walls) photo exhibition by Nidal Šaljić, featuring 27 photographs of former concentration camps and detention sites across Bosnia and Herzegovina from the 1992-1995 war. Over three years, Nidal has created a rich archive of over 6,000 photos from various locations, including Srebrenica, Prijedor, Banja Luka, and Mostar.

Inter-faith dialogue & cooperation

We took part in the Muslim Jewish Leadership Council - Europe & KAICIID's Ambassadors Launch Event in Sarajevo gathering inspirational voices locally and across Europe to share experiences about the key role of young people in fostering resilient and cohesive communities. Our President Velma Saric spoke at the launching about the importance of inter-religious dialogue and its benefits during times of division and tension.
