Stop Genocide Campaign, Gabriola Island, BC, Canada

100th STOP GENOCIDE Lawn Sign erected on Canadian island

GABRIOLA ISLAND, British Columbia, Canada- July 12, 2026

The one hundredth STOP GENOCIDE sign was put up on Geanine’s property on Commodore Way, Gabriola, BC on July 12, 2026. The STOP GENOCIDE campaign was started by Alex Strachan three months ago on Gabriola Island.

The Gabriola Stands Up campaign began April 14th when Alex Strachan, a Gabriola web developer, followed his father Richard's lead and put a sign on his own property, then started going door to door asking his neighbours to do the same. He's delivered every one of the 100 signs himself, mostly on foot, with his dog Zoe.

"The goal was 50 signs when we started," Strachan said. "We're at 100 now, and the new goal is 250. I have the signs. I just need neighbours willing to put one up."

Today also marked the campaign's first Gabriola business. Island Meat & Deli put a sign in its front window, the first commercial storefront on the island to join a campaign that, until now, has lived entirely on residential lawns and fences.

Alongside the signs, two petitions are circulating on the island. A general petition asking Canada to stop the killing of innocent people has 56 signatures so far, with a goal of 4,570, every resident of Gabriola and Mudge Island.

A second petition, asking the Canada Pension Plan to divest from companies complicit in genocide, war crimes and apartheid, has 37 signatures. CPP Investments increased its holdings in those companies from $20.3 billion to $54.8 billion in the year ending March 2026, according to a report from Just Peace Advocates.

Strachan says Gabriola is meant to be the start, not the end. He's building canadastandsup.ca so any Canadian community can run the same campaign under its own local name and domain, delivered door to door the same way every sign on Gabriola has been.

"This is a long-term community effort," Strachan said. "The goal is all of Canada standing up, one community at a time. But it starts here, on Gabriola, with us."

Anyone on Gabriola who wants a sign can email gabriolastandsup@gmail.com or fill in the form at gabriolastandsup.ca. Strachan delivers anywhere on the island, and signs are free if cost is a barrier.
